NIKE’S CO-FOUNDER DONATES $2 BILLION TO CANCER CENTER —THE LARGEST UNIVERSITY GIFT IN HISTORY TO ADVANCE TREATMENT AND RESEARCH

Nike’s co-founder Phil Knight just made history with a $2 billion donation to the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Cancer Center — the largest university gift ever given.

Phil Knight and his wife Penny’s incredible pledge will accelerate cancer prevention, early detection, and precision treatment research — potentially saving millions of lives in the coming decades.

Their support builds on a long legacy of giving to OHSU, including $100 million in 2008 and a $500 million challenge grant in 2013, which helped fund groundbreaking work in leukemia and genetic cancer therapies.

The donation will help lead researcher Dr. Brian Druker, the pioneer behind one of the world’s first targeted cancer drugs (Gleevec), expand testing and clinical trials that aim to detect cancer years before symptoms appear — transforming treatment from reactive to preventive.

“This is about rewriting the story of cancer,” said Druker. “Thanks to the Knights’ vision, we now have the resources to move faster than ever.”
Phil and Penny Knight’s extraordinary act of generosity not only cements their legacy in healthcare innovation but also stands as a reminder that real progress comes when science and humanity unite.
