New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has officially declined President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the controversial “Board of Peace”. In a statement released, Luxon confirmed that his government would not join the body in its “current form,” stating that it would not add “significant further value” to existing diplomatic efforts regarding the conflict in Gaza.
Foreign Minister Winston Peters reinforced the decision, emphasizing that as a longstanding supporter of the United Nations, New Zealand requires “clarity” on how this new Trump-led organization aligns with the UN Charter. The “Board of Peace,” launched by Trump earlier in the month, has drawn sharp international criticism for its structure, which reportedly requires nations to contribute $1 billion to secure permanent membership and designates Trump as “chairman for life”.
While some regional powers like Saudi Arabia and Indonesia have joined, New Zealand’s refusal highlights the hesitation among traditional Western allies to embrace the new parallel institution.
